Although, saying “again” is very generous. Here I am, in the middle of October, still waiting for the warmth-filled summer I was planned, and harkening back to the umbrella filled August the Uk experienced this year. I suppose I had come to finally accept the fact that the UK summer of 2021 was a bit of a wash weatherwise. However, while I tied up with grieving the summer I never had, the Autumn chill snuck up on me and stabbed me in the back.
It’s too cold for bare sleeves, I’m too proud to go full winter coat, there’s rain and there’s wind but I’m sweaty by the end of my walk to work… The weather can’t make up its mind and therefore neither can I and it’s frustrating, to say the least. Every year I struggle and every year I’m reminded that I’ve done this before and I can do this again. So, without further ado, let’s talk about wearing transitional clothing for Autumn.
“Transitional clothing”: The perfect excuse to delay the cumbersome chore of packing up your summer clothes. It’s the clothing equivalent of “the best of both worlds”, and a way to get a little more use out of your summer dresses. If I think about it, it’s probably one of my favourite seasons to dress for… But then I remember what the weather is like when I’m wearing my transitional pieces, and I run back to my silly little sundresses and the promise of warmth that they bring.
Nevertheless, wearing transitional clothing for Autumn brings about a chance to mess around a little and mix and match things, so here are some transitional tips that I find help me.
My jacket collection is probably my favourite thing in my wardrobe, and it really gets thrust into the limelight during Autumn.

Don’t get me wrong, with the kind of biting cold we seem to get in the UK I could definitely leave my house in a winter coat in October. However, the issue here is that by the time I walk to work or run for a train, I’m hot and I’m sweaty and it was all in vain. Solution? A light jacket. I’ll be a little chilly when I venture into the outside, but the pay off in both style and general comfort? So worth it.
Do you, like, me, have attachment issues to your cute little sundresses? I strongly recommend buying some basic knit jumpers that you can wear again and again and again. Grab some tights and throw one of those bad boys over a patterned sundress and you’ve got an Autumnal jumper skirt combo for the win.
I have been wearing the same black knit V-neck from the Marks & Spencers menswear section for 9 years now and it still looks good as new. Seriously; I bought it to wear as my year 10 school jumper, and I currently wear it every 2-3 weeks because I throw it over everything for warmth, comfort and style.
If it was not clear already, I do not like to sweat. I do not like to go about my activities in the middle of October and wish I were wearing less. Solution? Layers. And lots of them.
When looking for transitional clothing for Autumn, I make sure I have some thin sleeved ribbed tops (Like this one from NA-KD*) that I can throw under dresses, pinafores, jackets, jumpers and hoodies as an added extra. If I’m too hot in a hoodie or a jacket, I know I still have sleeves to protect me from the cold. Likewise, I know that I won’t be shivering in the short sleeves of my dress or pinafore.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against wearing tights. I’m a regular black 30 denier wearer and have an occasional soft spot for a spotty pair in the Autumn. However, there are just some outfits that tights don’t go with. And I do not care about fashion enough to get my bare legs out in the dead of Autumn. Last year, I finally found a shade of good quality, skin-coloured tights that come in an appropriate shade for my darker skin. M&S, you are my heroes (For reference, I get the shade “suntan”).
The chills are creeping, the wind is blowing, let’s get those layers and jackets and get a move on! I find that transitional clothing is the perfect way to drag out my summer wardrobe just that little bit longer before we’re hit with everything winter’s got for us.
And that’s it for today! Feel free to share your own tips for transitional clothing for Autumn below so we can all learn from each other!
Lots of love,
Jas xx
