It’s almost Christmas once again, and as Christmas rolls around, so do the work and society group Christmas Dinners. As much as I love the actual sit-down-and-make-it-myself Christmas Dinner on the actual day, I will admit, I am partial to a group restaurant dinner as well. I have been since the days of school Christmas Dinners. Therefore, it is great that I was able to work with Bookatable, book Sage & Chilli through their festive dinner finder, and head out to review it with my family, for an extra festive edition of Foodie Finds.
Sage & Chilli is a restaurant located inside the Saint Giles Hotel in London, just off of Tottenham Court Road. The restaurant strikes itself as very affordable, with most of their deals falling from £10-15. We were there to try the Christmas festive menu, which can be booked here and offers 2 courses and a glass of wine for £12.95 per person, and 3 courses and a glass of wine for £15.95 per person. You also each got a Christmas cracker, because what is Christmas without them?

The set menu came with 3-4 options per course, each with at least one veggie (and in some cases, vegan) option. All of the food was delivered promptly and the staff were lovely and attentive.
Though pate isn’t a thing I eat regularly, I do love to order it in a restaurant when I have the chance. I thought that this was going to be a duck and orange pate but it turns out that it was duck pate with an orange chutney. I’m not complaining as it was still delicious (I love a sweet/savoury mix), just thought it was worth a mention.
My one complaint, if I were to have one is that there wasn’t enough melba toast for the vast amount of pate they provided. However, they did supply an extra 6 bread rolls for the table, so I just slathered those up with pate.
I’m always a bit intrigued as to what “trimmings” are going to be when it comes to a roast. This ended up being potatoes, veg, spinach, gravy, a singular cocktail sausage and a parsnip.
Though this wasn’t necessarily bad, it truly did remind me of primary school Christmas dinners. The turkey was kind of bland, everything seemed a little lukewarm, and I definitely could have done with more sausages. Plus, it upset me that there was no stuffing. However, that being said, it was still enjoyable and I thought it was worth the money considering the whole three courses were only £15.95. In fact, I still ate it all.
I was expecting more of a tart experience, but it turns out this was a lot cakier. However, it did not disappoint. The torte was beautifully rich, with great balance so it wasn’t too much. The vanilla ice cream that it came with was smooth and creamy, and came in a little brandy snap basket, allowing me to enjoy the brandy snap straight after. Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Though we were given a glass of house wine with our meal, I couldn’t help ordering a couple of cocktails. The Long Island Iced Tea was super strong, and if your goal was to get a little drunk it would definitely get the job done, and the cosmopolitan was one of the nicest I’ve had. It was sweet and alcoholic without being too much. At £5.75 a cocktail, you can’t really go wrong.
The stand-out feature has definitely got to be the price. I had to re-read the menu a couple of times before I truly believed it was as cheap as it was.
As I said in my food section, though there were bits I absolutely loved, I found the main a little bland and disappointed. However, I strongly believe that it was well worth the money spent. It would be the ideal location for a University society looking fo book a Christmas meal or a group that is looking for something budget but still Christmassy. Therefore, I would definitely go again in that sort of capacity, but probably not if I was looking for a nice sit-down Christmas meal with my family. Don’t forget to check out Bookatable to find out which places near you are doing the best festive menu options! They also have a Christmas Day page if you’re looking for a restaurant for the big day!
And there you have it! Thank you so much to Bookatable for sponsoring this post. Would you check out Sage & Chilli? Let me know in the comments!

Hahaha I’m glad the pictures do it justice!
This is definitely well worth the money. I also love getting things like pate and bread for starters at a restaurant and I often find they give you SO MUCH pate and not enough bread to put it on haha! Your description of the dinner made me cringe a bit cos I don’t remember my school Christmas dinners particularly fondly! Sounds like you still enjoyed it though – your dessert sounds fab xxx
Haha yeah school Christmas dinners were very hit and miss, weren’t they! And I ALSO find that there’s never enough bread for the pate!
I love a food review and the Sage & Chili sounds like somewhere I’d like to try myself.
Sorry to hear the main was a little disappointing however. It’s so sad when the main attraction is a let down and can sometimes ruin the rest of the experience for you. Nonetheless, I’m glad you’d go again under the right circumstances and the meal wasn’t a total right off in future.
