It’s been a hot minute since I mentioned that I went to Sorrento… Cue the Capri post.
If you’re new to this, I’ve been away quite a lot recently and I want to start incorporating more travel onto this blog. As a result, we had my first post all about things you should check out in Sorrento. Now here comes the second, detailing my day spent in Capri. When booking this trip, I had no real idea on what I wanted to do, other than the fact that I wanted to do a mini boat cruise. This was only further confirmed by every site and blog recommendation telling me that I needed to visit Capri.
Capri is an island close to the coast of Sorrento. It’s split into two sections: Anacapri, up a hill where you will find beautiful views and museums and Capri, where you will find shops and restaurants and patches of beach and coast to swim in. Both are beautiful and both are great holiday destinations, so I would recommend visiting both if you were to go. Honestly, I feel like they really go hand in hand: One has the scenery and the views and the other has leisurely activities, which are definitely a vital part of a holiday.
The island of Capri, whilst similar to Sorrento, offers its own charm. It is beautiful, bustling and has sparkling oceans, and many a cave and grotto to explore and marvel at.
I will preface this by reinforcing that I stayed in Sorrento and merely did a day trip to Capri. Therefore, this is more of a guide for if you want to do the same, and not so much a guide to Capri in general. As a result, it seems fitting that I start by talking about the cruise itself.
This was the biggest purchase I made during the holiday and I can say without a doubt that it was definitely worth it. The cruise that we booked through Get your Guide was £69 and included pickup and dropoff to the pier from a place 2 minutes from our Air BnB, the boat ride to and from Capri, 4 hours of free time to explore Capri and a boat tour of the grottos and tourist attractions in the water. There was an £89 option that also included lunch and time to scuba, but my friends and I felt the cheaper one fit our needs. (With only 4 days in the pizza/pasta home that is Italy, I’m not wasting a meal on sandwiches.
The process started off a little shakey; the car hadn’t arrived at our pickup point on time, we had no real means of contacting them, and when a car from the company did arrive, it turned out not to be our one. However, the driver of the other van called our driver and figured it out pretty quickly. That being said, the whole process getting from the pickup point to the pier could have been done with more communication. Despite the shaky start though, the actual boat cruise was more than I could have asked for. The tour guide was lovely and informative, the groups were kept small, keeping to 8-10 people per boat, and the boat ride itself was amazing, filled with sights to see and an allround fun experience.
Dare I say it was my favourite thing I did on this trip? I do. I do dare. Warning though: it can be a bit choppy and it’s a small boat, so I would not recommend if you suffer from seasickness.
We had 4 hours to explore both Capri and Anacapri, so we chose to take the blue coach, that cost 15 euros to drive us up to Anacapri, wait two hours and then drive us back down to Capri. Finding the coach and getting the ticket was no faff because our boat tour guide recommended and set us up.
Anacapri itself is up a mountain. However, you also have the option to go up a chairlift and get to the highest point on the island, in order to get the best view and check out the cafes and lounge spots up there. The chairlift itself takes around 20 mins and costs 9 euros for a single, if you want to go up on the chairlift and then walk down, or 12 euros for a return. I was a little bit scared because I am a big baby, but it was surprisingly relaxing. Take your earphones with you and listen to music whilst you zone out for a bit and take in the view. Just don’t be a wally and wear flip flops like I did.
Once you arrive at the top of the island, there’s a mini gift shop, deckchairs to lounge in, and a place to take in the view from the top of the island. Additionally, there is a cafe in which you can settle for some granita or a coffee. I’d 100% recommend the chairlift as a fun experience to do in Capri.
If you are yet to buy souvenirs, this would be a great place to browse. They have your regular tourist stuff: magnets, bottle openers, shot glasses, the usual. Then, as you venture into certain streets you can find designer stores, bespoke pieces, art and beautifully crafted souvenirs. There’s something for everybody.
I feel like, in terms of places, I definitely preferred Sorrento and felt that there was more to do there, but that could be because I only spent a few hours in Capri. However, my verdict on the whole cruise day trip is that it was absolutely fantastic and not to be missed. Yes, it’s quite a bit of money. However, the one that we booked was 100% worth the money, and hands down my favourite day of the trip. I would definitely go back specifically to do a day like this again, so strongly recommend.

I’ve never been to Capri but I’m down for pretty much anything Italian. Other than the whole boat/ cruise thing (I hate open bodies of water…just me?). BUT Capri sounds otherwise enjoyable. The flip flops sound like a great choice ?. x
